Located a few miles west of Portland, the city of Beaverton is the 6th (or possibly 7th, behind Bend) largest city in Oregon. The population is currently just over 100,000 people, and growing. Globally, it may be best known as the international headquarters of Nike, Inc. Locally, we know it as a vibrant and diverse place that cares about its neighbors, schools, and community culture.
Beaverton was once the home of the Native American tribe known as the Atfalati. In fact, early settlers commonly mispronounced the tribe’s name as Tualatin, giving rise to what is now known as the Tualatin Valley. Long ago, the area was covered in swamps and marshes, forming a lake that was connected by beaver damns (hence the name, Beaverton) and became an early hub of activity as a mill town, both grain and lumber.
These days, glimpses of this history can be found in some of the main thoroughfares, many of which were named after the area’s early settlers. Notably, Hall Boulevard, Denney Road, and Allen Road are take their name from families that settled here in the mid 1800’s. Additionally, you will still find many of the swamps and marshes that once blanketed the area.
In recent history, Beaverton has gained attention as one of the Top 100 Best Places to live (Money, 2010) as well as its popular farmer’s market which is open nearly year round. The foodie culture here is growing as well, with many new restaurants popping up and adding to the already vast list of popular and delicious restaurants. Beaverton is also recognized as having one of the best school districts in the state, prompting many families to move here from other parts of the Portland Metro area.
